Separate Peace Essay, Research Paper Without the minor characters the narrative # 8220 ; A Separate Peace # 8221 ; would be losing major points and it wouldn? t tally swimmingly. The minor characters in the narrative play an of import function in the manner the narrative falls together and in doing Finny to decease. The minor characters in this narrative set up sort of props for other things to go on in the narrative. For illustration Brinker? s struggle with Gene. The first portion of the struggle begins in the butt room where Brinker brings Gene after Finny has his autumn. Brinker tries to state everyone that Gene in fact did strike hard Finny off of the tree. Gene gets out by doing up a brainsick narrative but he is still huffy at Brinker for this so he must acquire even. So subsequently on in the narrative, at the winter carnival, Gene gives Brinker a ground to keep a stigma against him. We will write a custom essay sample on The Role Of Minor Characters In A or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Gene, caught up in the exhilaration, and acquiring back at Brinker for the butt room incident, pours some cider down Brinker? s pharynx. This cyder about choking coils Brinker which causes him to be angry at Gene and he must acquire even with Gene subsequently. So even later in the narrative, as his retaliation, Brinker sets up another test about Gene? s forcing Finny off of the tree. He gets everyone into his # 8220 ; # 8221 ; tribunal room # 8221 ; to watch the test and he tries to turn out that Gene did in fact push Finny away. The consequence of all of this retaliation and the consequence of Brinker? s being is that Finny finds out the truth which is that Gene did strike hard him out of the tree on intent. The major consequence is that Finny dies because of Brinker. So Brinker, being a minor character, has the function of partially doing Finny to decease in the terminal. If it wasn? T for Brinker, Finny would hold still been alive. Minor characters besides add secret plan and volume to the narrative and maintain it alive. For illustration Leper? s traveling to the war. When Leper goes to the war, it is brought as a surprise. This is because Leper is non expected to be a war traveling type of cat. Leper is a quiet, non athletic cat, doing him non a really ideal war individual. Brinker would hold been expected to be the first to enlist in the war because he is so large and athletic. This is one portion of the minor characters adding secret plan to the narrative. Another portion is Leper? s really in writing description of the war to Gene. This makes the war seem really existent in the narrative. The most of import thing Leper does to lend to the narrative as a minor character is that he is besides to fault for Finny? s decease. Brinker calls Leper into the ââ¬Å"courtâ⬠to depict what he saw when Finny fell out of the tree. It was during Leper? s description of how he saw Gene bouncing the limb when Finny realized the truth and had his 2nd accident on the stepss, which lead to his decease. So Leper can be said to be portion of the ground Finny dies, and at the same clip he adds secret plan to the narrative in how he goes to war. If Leper wasn? T in the narrative, Finny would hold still been alive because Brinker wouldn? T be able to turn out that Gene was guilty and Finny wouldn? Ts have run out of the tribunal to hold his 2nd autumn. The minor characters in this novel are besides used to for-shadow things. For illustration, When Doctor Stanpole turns out the visible radiation in the corridor. When Finny finds out about Gene? s knowing forcing him off the tree, he runs and falls down the steps. Dr. Stanpole comes to analyze him on the steps. Gene stays back out of the manner so that Finny doesn? t acquire all worked up and ache himself once more. Once everyone is gone but the physician, Gene approaches him at the chapel doors, and attempts to inquire him what? s incorrect. # 8220 ; It? s the leg once more. Broken once more. But a much cleaner interruption I think, much cleansing agent. A simple break. He found the light switch and the anteroom was plunged into darkness. # 8221 ; Doctor Stanpole is used in this portion of the narrative as a for-shadow to Finny? s decease. The for-shadowing is when the physician says that it? s a simple break, and turns out the visible radiations. The darkness for-shadows decease. The physician is besides set up to be portion of the cause of Finny? s decease. The physician is the 1 who tries to run on Finny? s bone and put it by traveling it. But the physician does something incorrect. Bone marrow flights from finny? s bone, acquiring into his bosom and killing him. So the physician is one of the minor characters and he is used to for-shadow Finny? s decease, besides he is portion of Finny? s decease. This makes him an of import portion of the narrative. If Doctor Stanpole wasn? T in the narrative, there wouldn? t be any for-shadowing of Finny? s decease, and Finny might still be alive because a different physician would hold had to make the operation and he may non hold done the same error. Without the minor characters of this narrative, Finny would likely still be alive and the narrative would be missing some of the for-shadowing of Finny? s decease. The minor characters in # 8220 ; A Separate Peace # 8221 ; play of import functions in how the narrative falls together and how they all cause Finny to decease in the terminal.

Achebes view of the missionaries in Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe.
Achebes view of the missionaries in Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe, is a story about a Nigerian Igbo tribe forced to endure, and live with European Christians. These Europeans were colonizing Africa with the intentions of setting up Christian missionaries. While their intentions were genuine, their presence was devastating to the Ibo culture. Achebe did not like how the Europeans and the Igbo people interacted with each other. The European missionaries viewed their religion as superior to the Igbo religion because there was never an effort made by them to understand the Ibo religion.English: Chinua Achebe speaking at Asbury Hall, Bu...The missionaries' goal was to come to Nigeria and take control of the Igbo society. In order for them to do this, they had to win the people over and for them to do that; they converted the Igbo people to Christianity. Achebe did not agree with the missionaries and in his story, he tried to get the reader to emphasize with the Igbo culture. In the story, he describes every reason and purpose for every action the Igbo people did. He talked about their festivals and their traditions. He even used words like obi and egwugwu as a way to connect the reader with the Igbo language.Achebe hated what the missionaries did and how they tried to colonize his people. I think the story of a man who killed a messenger and hanged himself makes an interesting reading. The death of Okonkwo is symbolic and Achebe ends the story like this to show the reader how the Europeans viewed the Igbo people. Okonkwo killed himself because the Christian missionaries did not understand their religion and all they wanted to do was to break up their religious meetings and convert people to Christianity. Achebe felt like if the Christian missionaries learned about the Igbo people, they might...

Joseph Winters and the Fire Escape Ladder
Joseph Winters and the Fire Escape Ladder On May 7, 1878, the fire escape ladder was patented by Joseph Winters. Joseph Winters invented a wagon-mounted fire escape ladder for the city of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. A historic marker was placed in 2005 at the Junior Hose and Truck Company #2 in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania noting Winters patents for the fire escape ladder and hose conductor and his work on the Underground Railway. It lists his dates of birth and death as 1816-1916. Life of Joseph Winters There are at least three different, widely varying birth years given for Joseph Winters, from 1816 to 1830 by various sources. His mother was Shawnee and his father, James, was a black brickmaker who worked at Harpers Ferry to build the federal gun factory and arsenal. The familys tradition said that his father was also descended Powhatan chiefà Opechancanough. Joseph was raised by his grandmother Betsy Cross in Waterford, Virginia, where she was known as the Indian Doctor woman, a herbalist and healer. His later knowledge of nature may have stemmed from this time. At that time there were free black families in the area and Quakers who were active abolitionists. Winters used the nickname Indian Dick in his publications. Joseph also later worked at Harpers Ferry sanding brick molds before the family moved to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. In Chambersburg, he was active in the Underground Railroad, helping enslaved people escape to freedom. In Wintersà autobiography, he claimed to have arranged the meeting between Frederick Douglass and abolitionist John Brown at the quarry in Chambersburg before the historic Harpers Ferry raid. Douglasss autobiography credits a different person, local barber Henry Watson. Winters wrote a song, Ten Days After the Battle of Gettysburg, and also used that as the title for his lost autobiography. He also wrote a campaign song for presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan, who lost to William McKinley. He was noted for hunting, fishing, and fly-tying. He engaged in oil prospecting in the Chambersburg area but his wells only hit the water. He died in 1916 and is buried in Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Chambersburg. Fire Ladder Inventions of Joseph Winters Buildings were being built taller and taller in American cities in the late 19th century. Fire crews at that time carried ladders on their horse-drawn fire engines. These were usually normal ladders, and they couldnt be too long or the engine wouldnt be able to turn corners into narrow streets or alleys. These ladders were used to evacuate residents from burning buildings as well as to give the firemen and their hoses access. Winters thought it would be smarter to have the ladder mounted on the fire engine and be articulated so it could be raised up from the wagon itself. He made this folding design for the city of Chambersburg and received a patent for it. He later patented improvements to this design. In 1882 he patented a fire escape that could be attached to buildings. He reportedly received much praise but little money for his inventions. Fire Ladder Patents US patent #203,517 Improvement in fire-escape ladders, granted on May 7, 1878.US patent #214,224 Improvement in fire-escape ladders, granted on April 8, 1879.US patent #258186 Fire escape, granted on May 16, 1882.

Business Operations at BMW Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 5000 words - 2
Business Operations at BMW - Essay Example This research will begin with the statement that every other accolade that is used to describe a successful company can be used to describe Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, commonly referred to as BMW AG or simply BMW. This is because since 1916 that the company was established as a car, motorcycle and vehicle engine manufacturer, the company has not looked back in terms of growth and expansion. Headquartered in Germany, BMW specializes in several divisions of production, including Mini, BMW Motorsport, BMW I, and BMW Motorrad. Interestingly, BMW is not the kind of company that can be said to be operating in a monopoly market where competition is relatively absent. This is because the company operates in the automobile industry where there continues to be tough and stiff opposition from several other successful carmakers. Within Germany where the company is parented and the larger global market, there is very stiff opposition that the company faces by the day. Even within Germany alone, BMW is regarded as one of the ââ¬Å"Germany Big 3â⬠together with Audi and Mercedes Benz, all of which are engaged best-selling of luxury automobiles across the globe. On the larger global market, other competitors can be identified such as Toyota, Benz, and Kia. In such competitive environments, Film notes that the success of companies relies and depend largely on a critical understanding of their competing market, as well as the business operations dynamics that exist within these markets. Knowing oneââ¬â¢s customers and the best strategic options that best corresponds with the needs of customers is also important in ensuring survival on the competitive global market.

Martin Luther King Jr. and the Philosophy of Civil Disobedience in Research Paper
Martin Luther King Jr. and the Philosophy of Civil Disobedience in Todays World - Research Paper Example Until his assassination in 1968, Dr. King championed civil rights movements and was dedicated to the course of justice and freedom through nonviolent means. There are many ways in which the oppressed deal with their oppression. According Martin Luther king Jr., there are three basic ways through which the oppressed deal with their oppression. These include acquiescence, physical aggression and hatred and nonviolent opposition (Warner and Hilliard 311). When the oppressed resort to use acquiescence, they basically become submissive and acclimatize to oppression, thus becoming accustomed to the oppression (Warner and Hilliard 311). Not all people are willing to break free from oppression. Some individuals usually prefer to stay under oppression. Such people become used to oppressive situations in a way that they give preference to maintaining their slavery status quo than subject themselves to uncertain freedom. People who chose acquiescence as a means of dealing with their oppression are usually engulfed in their suppression that they simply fail to think beyond their current predicament. In such a situation, the oppressed adopts the system of the oppressor and is as wicked as his master. One current example is the case of Syria where Bashar-al-Assadââ¬â¢s administration is tactically scheming to erode the influence of opposition parties and making multitude of Syrians to absolutely depend on the government support and continue living under oppression by the Syrian government. Just like Martin Luther King Jr. acknowledged, no oppressor will ever grow a rational emotion and award his slaves their much desired freedom. As such, this approach is quite immoral and futile way of dealing with oppression. Physical aggression and sheer hatred is the second way through which the oppressed may prefer in dealing with their oppression (Warner and Hilliard 312). Like Martin Luther King Jr. argues, the oppressor is never in a position to grant freedom voluntarily and the o ppressed must demand for it. Violent confrontation of oppressive regime has been used by many nations to win their freedom. For example, in 2011, the rebels in Libya resorted to capture and assassinate Muammar Gaddafi over claims of long time oppression of the Libyan people. Great masses rejoiced from his death because they perceived the execution of Gaddafi as the onset of their freedom. However, violence is not the best way of attaining freedom. It never brings eternal peace, offers no solution to social problems, but only pile many more challenges to the society. Lastly, the oppressed can resort to nonviolent approach to end their repression and achieve their desired freedom (Corlett 32). This approach reconciles acquiescence and physical aggression approaches to obtaining freedom. Nonviolent opposition seeks to find a balance point between the oppressor and the oppressed by eliminating the vices that characterize the current situation and creating friendship between the two (Lon g 104). It consciously seeks to foster equality among all people. For example, in Lebanon, approximately one-quarter of the countryââ¬â¢s population convened in Beirut in 2005 to protest the killing of a famous politician and demanded the termination of the oppressive government led by Syria together with withdrawal of Syrian military. This is the best approach because it tackles the challenges of the oppressed and seeks to make things better for them unlike acquiescence and
